Caramel Squares

1 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup butter

1 egg

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup chopped walnuts

1/2 tsp vanilla

Heat the sugar and butter in a saucepan, stirring constantly until sugar has melted and the mixture has taken on the appearance of fudge. Do not boil. Remove from heat and let cool. Beat in egg, creaming well. Then stir in flour, sifted with baking powder and salt. Fold in nuts and vanilla and spread in greased 9" square pan. Bake at 300° for 20 minutes. Cut in squares and let cool in pan.
